Candle Safety Policy
Candle Safety Policy
At Sugar & Wicks Co., your safety is our top priority. Please read and follow these candle safety guidelines carefully before lighting any of our candles.
Before You Light
- Always trim your wick to ¼ inch before each use to prevent excessive flame, smoking, and soot.
- Remove all packaging, labels, and decorative elements before lighting.
- Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from the edge of furniture.
- Keep candles away from drafts, vents, and air currents that could cause uneven burning or flare-ups.
While Burning
- Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or going to sleep.
- Keep burning candles away from children and pets.
- Keep candles away from flammable materials such as curtains, bedding, books, and paper.
- Do not burn candles for more than 4 hours at a time. Allow the candle to cool for at least 2 hours before relighting.
- Never touch or move a burning candle. The glass vessel will be hot during and after use.
- Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and other debris.
First Burn
- Allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the vessel on the first burn. This prevents tunneling and ensures an even burn throughout the life of your candle.
- The first burn should last at least 2–3 hours for a 10 oz candle.
When to Stop Burning
- Discontinue use when ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel. Burning beyond this point can cause the glass to overheat.
- If the flame becomes too large, extinguish the candle, let it cool, trim the wick, and relight.
Extinguishing Your Candle
- Use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame. Avoid blowing directly into the candle as this can cause hot wax to splatter.
- Never use water to extinguish a candle — this can cause the glass to crack.
- Ensure the wick ember is fully extinguished before leaving the room.
